Alec Baldwin, the Hollywood star, could potentially face a jail sentence of up to 18 months. This comes after a New Mexico grand jury indicted him on Friday for his role in the tragic Rust shooting incident of 2021.
Alec Baldwin faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter following the tragic death of the movie’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. The actor has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting that he was unaware of the presence of a live round in the prop gun he was holding. He has also stated that the gun was fired unintentionally, without him intentionally pulling the trigger.
Special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis presented evidence to the grand jury. If found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, Baldwin could face a maximum prison sentence of 18 months.
We eagerly anticipate our day in court’, stated Baldwin’s solicitors, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, of Quinn Emanuel, informed NBC News.
Friday’s indictment follows the decision of New Mexico prosecutors to reopen the case against Baldwin, despite charges being dropped last year.
New information has emerged, prompting prosecutors to reopen the case after conducting a thorough investigation in recent months.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, a Rust armourer, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and is scheduled to go to trial on February 21.
She was responsible for managing firearms and ammunition for the production. Prosecutors will likely attempt to clarify how a live round ended up in the prop gun held by Baldwin.
The filming of Rust resumed last year in Montana, with production wrapping up in May. There has not been any news about a distributor or release date for the indie production.
