According to papers and sources, U.S. federal officials are examining Meta Platforms (META.O) for its participation in drug trafficking, the Wall Street Journal said on Saturday.
The article stated prosecutors submitted subpoenas last year and have been asking inquiries as part of a criminal grand jury inquiry, including requests for Meta’s drug content and unlawful drug sales information.
The FDA is also cooperating with the inquiry, the newspaper said. It highlighted that inquiries do not always result in charges.
Meta’s spokeswoman told the press, “The sale of illicit drugs is against our policies and we work to find and remove this content from our services”.
“Meta actively cooperates with law enforcement to combat the sale and distribution of illicit drugs,” he said
The prosecutors’ office and FDA spokesman refused to respond to WSJ.
Meta, the FDA, and the Virginia Attorney General did not reply to Reuters’ request for comment.
Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said on Friday on social networking platform X that Meta has partnered with the U.S. State Department, the UNODC, and Snapchat to stop the online sale of synthetic medicines and educate users about the hazards.
