According to William McGurn in the Wall Street Journal Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden has prioritized unrestricted abortion as the November election approaches.
According to McGurn, Mr. Biden has been vocal about his stance on abortion, expressing his opposition to any restrictions and his disapproval of the Hyde Amendment’s limitations on using tax dollars to fund them. From a political standpoint, there is no stronger support for the right to choose.
Despite being America’s second Catholic president, Biden faced significant opposition from the U.S. bishops due to his pro-abortion stance at the start of his presidency. However, Church leaders have remained surprisingly quiet as he pledges to reinstate abortion-on-demand as the legal norm.
Last week, Kamala Harris created a significant moment by becoming the first vice president to visit an abortion clinic. McGurn highlights her visit to a Planned Parenthood location in Minnesota, where she emphasized the Biden administration’s strong backing of America’s leading abortion provider.
There has been a shift within the Democratic party towards a more progressive stance on abortion, with some members urging party leaders to view it in a positive light rather than as a difficult and regrettable choice.
Long gone are the days when Mario Cuomo was known as the mastermind behind the “personally opposed” tactic that pro-choice Catholic Democrats relied on for years. Similarly, Bill Clinton’s famous abortion mantra of “safe, legal and rare” is now a thing of the past.
“Now an 81-year-old Catholic president has changed his stance on abortion, going against the limits he once supported as a senator, which some believe is influenced by the abortion lobby,” he adds, yet for some in the party it still isn’t enough.
Despite his clear stance on abortion, Mr. Biden often uses euphemisms when discussing the topic, which some perceive as an attempt to downplay the gravity of ending the life of an unborn child, an act that his Church considers to be murder.
In his recent State of the Union address, Biden made a subtle change to his prepared text. Instead of explicitly mentioning the reason as “Texas law banning abortion,” he phrased it as “Texas law banning her ability to act,” according to McGurn’s observation.
However, considering the Democratic party’s strong support for abortion in all circumstances, those who vote for Mr. Biden will have a clear understanding of what they are endorsing.
